Journalism in Guiné-Bissau: interview with António Aly Silva
António Aly Silva is a Guinean journalist, popular for his fight for freedom of the press and information in Guinea-Bissau. Since 2016, he has been writing and editing the blog Ditadura de Consenso, an independent journalism website with over 30 million hits and dedicated to covering issues relating to the defense of human rights and reports of corruption in his country. He dedicates special attention to issues linked to the nations of Lusitanian Africa.
Registered as a journalist by the Portuguese Professional Commission of Journalists since 1995, Aly has worked in Portugal for the weekly newspaper O Independente, as well as for Visão Online, and he has additionally directed the newspaper Lusófono. Below you can follow a conversation with him.
Enio Moraes Júnior — You are a critic of Guinea-Bissau’s politics. Last March, according to what was published in the international press, you suffered a serious attack. What were the motivations behind it and how are you now, four months later?
António Aly Silva — The truth is that even earlier, on March 12, 2020, I escaped a nighttime kidnapping that involved gunfire (with one bullet hitting the rear window of my car) and a high-speed chase through the city of Bissau.
