Journalism in Peru: interview with Sharún Gonzales Matute

Sharún Gonzales Matute is a Peruvian journalist and researcher. She currently lives in the United States and recently graduated from a dual master program in Latin American Studies and Political Sciences at the University of South Florida. She has experience in social development projects and community organizing in Peru, as well as in qualitative research, and corporative communication.

Sharún specializes in issues of Gender, Peoples of African Descent in Latin America and Communications. Her experience on research includes an analysis of Peruvian sports media’s discourse on racism and stereotypes, and an intersectional analysis of the experiences of women of African descent in the Peruvian Congress. She has a special interest in critical media studies, and intersectional inclusion policies. Below is an interview with this young researcher about journalism with focus on Peru.

Enio Moraes Júnior — Identity, racism, and human rights are important topics in your research. Do you think that in the past 20- or 30-years journalism on online platforms has really created more possibilities to discuss these issues?
